Black-Light Derby

We are turning down the lights and turning the fun up with our new Black Light Derby this year.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT?

This is a separate race from our conventional Pinewood Derby race. You may enter a separate car for each race.  The rules in this race are LESS restrictive.  One of the biggest differences is this race will be run under black light (UV)  so UV reactive paint/parts are encouraged over performance, but you can always go for both!

CHECK-IN

All cars will be checked in before the derby begins. Cars will NOT be checked in after the event has started. Alternate arrangements can be made in advance if absolutely necessary. Cars will be registered and inspected to ensure they’re race-legal. We will have tools to make spot repairs/mods to non-compliant cars. Cars will be impounded after check-in.

Here are the rules that disqualify most cars:

  • Overweight
  • Does Not Glow...
  • Oversized

After check-in, the scouts don’t handle or modify the cars.

Official Car Specifications & Rules

If you have any questions, please get in touch with the Cubmaster

  • The car must start as a "wood car kit" provided by the Pack.  Large emphasis on "start as".
  • MUST use the Official BSA Pinewood Derby kit (will be provided by the Pack)
  • Any wheels that will not damage the track are fine
  • Only official BSA/Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby wheels (reading “BSA Pinewood Derby” logo on the outside of wheels) and axles are permitted and MUST be purchased from our local Council. Please bring the receipt in case of any discrepancies.

  • The car shall not ride on springs
  • Only dry lubricant is permitted and can be added before check-in. It cannot be re-applied during the race.

  • The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.  (meaning it must start on its own; you can not assist)
  • No electric motors, compressed gas, or fuel-burning propulsion devices. NOTE: if used, it must be safe and pass inspection...
  • All wheels MUST be straight and touch/roll on the ground.
  • Each car must pass inspection, and the owner will be informed of the reason for disqualification and will be given time within the official weigh-in time to make adjustments.
  • If you arrive at the last moment and there are issues with your car, and you cannot fix it before the start of the race, unfortunately, you will not be able to qualify for the race. Please come early to avoid this situation.
  • After final approval, cars will not be re-inspected unless the car is damaged in handling or in a race and will be overseen by a leader.
  • Axle slots in wood must not be altered or shortened (the axel length cannot be changed), and these must be used to install axles.
CAUTION: You may alter them, but it must still run on the track properly.
  • Wheels cannot be altered or reshaped in any way that would change the original dimensions or profile.
  • No loose materials that will fall out of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in the car. As long as it stays secured in a crash, you are good to go.
  • The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight by adding material securely built into the body.
  • No test runs will be allowed on the track before the actual race.
  • The wheels may not be engine or motor-driven.
  • Maximum weight of 5 OZ
  • Have fun and enjoy the process with your Scout!

Dimensional Information:

For this race, if it fits the track, you can run it.  If you follow this drawing, your car will fit.
However, if you would like to push it, the following dimensions are absolute values;

Max overall with = 2.9"
Max overall Height = 5" (different than the image below, 5" is the max)
Max Length = Depends on wheel placement 7" is safe but longer if wheels are "stock."
Minimal wheel clearance spacing 1.1" (inside face to inside face to clear center guide rail)
Minimal bottom clearance = .13 +/- .02"

If you comply with the "normal" dimensions, you will be OK with this.  The only size regulations we are imposing are max width,  height, and length to ensure it fits on the track..
